Where Do I Steal Clouds Sword in Shinra Tower

Note: For anyone new to the game, switch Limit Levels of your team members as soon as they have a limit break move on Level 2 or higher. This will save some time in the long run.

Sewer

After falling down, talking to either girl first will give them more points towards the date that happens later in the game. It doesn't matter which of them you talk to first, as you should have Barret so far ahead by the time the date happens that it doesn't matter. Give someone the Fire Materia before talking to the second girl, and give Tifa the Metal Knuckle and Mythril Armlet as well. Afterwards comes a boss battle with a big, blue pig thing. It's weak to fire magic, which is why you should have given someone the Fire Materia.

Progress through the sewers until you return to the surface.

Train Graveyard

Climb onto the broken trains in order to move on ahead. Interact with two modeled trains to move them into a different position so you can return to Sector 7's train station.

Sector 7 Slums

The pillar holding Sector 7 together is under attack by Shinra soldiers. Barret is at the top of the pillar. Tifa will join you on your way up to him as Aeris watches over Biggs and Marlene.

Plate Support

Run up to Barret and equip with him with some new items before confirming his gear. Reno will arrive in a chopper and attack you after arming the bomb his Turks have set. In the battle against him, he may place characters in a pyramid attack; to free them, simply attack them once. After enough damage, Reno will use his chopper to fly away with the captured Aeris on board.

Sector 6

After landing in Sector 6, run a bit south until Barret and Tifa join you. Return to the park and pick up a Sense Materia, then make your way back to Aeris's house.

Aeris's House

Aeris's mother, Elmyra, will explain why the Shinra took her. Aeris is the last of a group of people called Ancients. Elmyra's husband was sent to Wutai in a war that he never came back from and, during her wait for him, a dying woman gave her daughter Aeris to her. After this has been explained, sleep in the bed upstairs and talk to Marlene. When talking to her, say:

  • I don't know

Head outside with Barret and Tifa and go back through the junk and park area to return to the Wall Market.

Wall Market

A man in the weapon shop (not the storekeeper) claims that you need batteries if you want to make it to the Sector 6 plate. Trust his word and buy three batteries. Then continue north, where some children will lead you to a large marking of graffiti behind a thick wire.

Plate Section

Climb the wire upwards and look for battery sockets that you can place your batteries into. When you get to a swinging wire, cn_A jump to it when the noise it makes is about halfway over. Once you've made it across the wire, you'll make it to the front of the Shinra Building.

Shinra Building

Tifa and Barret have their own ideas about getting to the 60th floor. Tifa wants to sneak up the stairs to the left, but Barret wants to start from the ground floor guns blazing. Tell them whatever you want and decide with your actions afterwards. Be aware, though, that blasting through the building is going to be not only more enjoyable but will provide experience that you'd probably have to make up by grinding later.

There's a shop on the third floor, but you don't really need to visit it unless you're decidedly low on potions and other similar items. Enter the elevator on one of the floors available to you and keep stopping the elevator at random floors until you hit the 59th floor.

Shinra Building 59F

There are some soldiers on this floor. Defeat them to get the keycard allowing access to the 60th floor. Get into the elevators behind where they once were and ride to the next floor.

Shinra Building 60F

On this floor, you're supposed to sneak past soldiers by running behind statues when they're not looking. If you want to just ignore all that, intentionally get caught enough times until the soldiers have been completely wiped out, allowing you to freely pass to the next floor.

Shinra Building 61F

Someone here, if you talk to them will ask you what you're doing here. If you respond with "...", he'll give you the key card up to the next floor for some reason.

Shinra Building 62F

This takes some work. There are four sets of bookshelves in colored rooms, and each room has its own category marked on the wall outside of it. Check each room and write down the number and name of the book that doesn't seem to fit with the collection. For example, if you find 16: Modern history of Midgar space program vol. 1 in the wrong room, write it down. When you've found the four books that don't belong, take the letter of the book that matches with its number. Using the previous example, if that was one of the wrong books, take the 16th letter from it (in this case, it would be M). Do this until you have four letters. The four of them, in some order or another, make up a word.

Talk to the mayor of Midgar, who will give you the card key to Floor 65 if you guess his password right. If you get it right the first try, he'll throw in an Elemental Materia.

Shinra Building 63F

On this floor, you can only open three doors at a time. If the computer on this floor doesn't recognize you having a card, try going back to the floor and riding up to the top again. Travel along the north wall and open the door you come across, then look at two doors facing south. Open the one on the left and enter the room to get A Coupon. Then climb into the air duct and enter the room east of the one you came from to get B Coupon. From there, open the one door blocking you from C Coupon and take the duct back to the computer. The Four Slots item is worn on someone's arm and has four Materia slots, but its defense is weaker.

Shinra Building 64F

Try to buy a drink on this floor for 250 Gil. You won't get a drink now, but you'll be getting something better later on for doing so. You can also save and rest on this floor, meaning that you can grind for experience on Floor 59 if you so choose.

Shinra Building 65F

This floor has a model of Shinra with some pieces missing. Only one chest on the floor will be open at a time, with each chest containing a piece of the model. Placing a piece will open up another chest. The final chest, near the stairs, has the card key for Floor 66.

Shinra Building 66F

There's a conference happening on this floor. Head to the bathrooms in the northwest corner and climb up the vent to spy on it. Follow Hojo, the man in charge of testing on Aeris, up to the next floor.

Shinra Building 67F

Move to the west wing of this floor and look at the thing Hojo is planning to test on today. After taking a good look at it, go north from there to the elevator to the next floor.

Note: Enemies on this floor with sharp swords have a weapon that would greatly benefit Cloud; if you have a Steal Materia equipped, use it to have a shot of stealing the enemy's Hardedge. Other enemies, large robots, can also hold Carbon Bangles, which are also very useful.

Shinra Building 68F

Try to stop Hojo's plans with Aeris, and when someone needs to take Aeris safely away, say:

  • Barret, take care of her!

The creature Hojo was about to test on is named Red XIII. Name it something and get ready to fight. In the incoming boss battle, focus on the enemy in the back; it's the boss you're trying to fight, and the three minions in front of it can be revived using a spell it has. You should be able to win after dealing enough damage.

The party of five will decide that it would make sense to leave the building in groups so as to not draw as much attention as a five-person group would. Set your party to Barret and Red XIII and make for the Floor 66 elevator.

The party will be captured and placed into the jail on the 67th floor after President Shinra talks to them about why he needs Aeris.

Shinra Building 67F

In your cell, talk to Tifa and say:

  • (Kinda hard)

Then go to the cell door and first say:

  • I wonder how Barret is doing

After that:

  • I wonder how Red XIII is doing

And finally:

  • I wonder how Aeris is doing

Approach the cell door once again to rest. The door will have opened up on its own. Check on the dead guard in the corner, then wake up Tifa and approach the elevator on this floor. Red XIII and Cloud will have some idea of what Jenova is, and that Jenova has taken the elevator up to higher floors. Save at the save point before taking it up.

Shinra Building 68F

Follow the blood trail up the stairs to Floor 69.

Shinra Building 69F

There's another save point for you to use, but that's about it. Follow the blood to the 70th floor.

Shinra Building 70F

AVALANCHE will find the Shinra President at his desk, but he'll have a pretty long sword in his back. Cloud comes to the conclusion that this sword must belong to Sephiroth, a man we don't really know too well yet. A survivor claims Sephiroth said that he won't allow anyone to have the Promised Land. Use the elevator-looking door to get outside.

Cloud will confront Rufus Shinra as the others escape. Head to the elevator on the 69th floor and make sure to take Cloud's and Tifa's equipment for this journey. Equip Aeris and Red XIII with some ranged Materia attacks, because they're going to need them on the way down the elevator. When the heavy-duty tank boss fires at you from across the elevators, use these ranged attacks (Barret can also just attack normally) until it's been defeated. Another robot will appear after its defeat; do the same thing until it falls too.

The focus returns to Cloud. Take your gear off of the other party members and set Cloud up to deal some damage (and heal himself). After taking enough damage, Rufus will fly off with his helicopter. Head downstairs and have Aeris go towards the exit.

Midgar Highway

Cloud will steal a motorcycle as the others get into a truck, and it'll be his job to protect them. Before starting this segment, enter the menus and give Barret and Tifa some gear and Materia. Keep the controls in mind: cn_X and cn_B are to attack on the sides, and moving is normal. After making it to the end of the line, a heavy-duty tank will rush in. This is why it was important to update Barret and Tifa's gear. The fight shouldn't be too troublesome if someone can heal the party, and even if they can't, you should have a fair amount of potions stocked up anyway.

After defeating the boss, AVALANCHE will use a rope hook to descend to the ground.
